1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Like one of the other guys said......alot of convertibles were automatics, especially in the last years of production.
I have a '94T-conv. which is an automatic. It has 114K on it and no trans problems to date. Of course I just jinxed myself by saying that. Bought the car with 68K on it. I would prefer a 5-speed but the auto is not that bad. It gets a bum rap around here but if you take care of it, they are fine. It does run at a higher rpm than a 5-speed but the MPG is not to much lower than a 5-speed. I have taken it on quite a few trips and the MPG was very close to what I get on my '90 5-speed.
What I do to care for it is.....I have drained as much trans fluid as I can and topped up with fresh fluid at each oil change. Works out to about 3.5qts each time. It is overkill but ATF is cheap and a tranny is not. Started out by doing the above process 4 times to get all the old fluid out and then have proceeded with the change of 3.5qts each oil change. Make sure to use type F.
I have not had a problem with the top or its motor. I haven't heard of too many here having problems with them either. The top can be done yourself but........I don't think I would try it. You can get everything you need to do it yourself for around $700. Jon...who posts here often has step by step photos of the top he did himself. I saw his car a couple of years ago at "Swedish Car Day" up here and he did an excellent job. Said it took him the whole weekend. I had mine replaced last year by a pro....cost around $1500. That was the entire thing though...top, rear window and headliner. Plus that is a Boston price.
The turbo should last you a long time. Definately switch the car over to a good synthetic oil and it will last. Get a good engine flush like Amsoil, follow the directions and then pour in the synthetic.
The valves will tick from time to time on a 900....which I'm sure you know. That being said...just get it checked out to make sure it is nothing major. Other than that look at the service records. I'm sure you know most of the weaker points on a 900 so.....they didn't really change to much over the years so just look out for them.
Have fun with your decision!
