I have both a '90 16v and '85 8v, both n/a. The 16v is somewhat faster both on paper and in the seat. However, either car can be smoked by common jap and american econo boxes - deal w/ it. Point then is, what car you enjoy driving for what it is? IMO, the 8v has loads more character than the 16v, which I find 'thin' feeling. For my pleasure dollar, whine out that little 8v on backroads for all it's worth - it'll sing its heart out for you hauling that fat 3000lb Swedish figure. A curiously endearing Jeep/tractor quality. Am leisurely shopping for a turbo now - an 8v to restore, mind you.
Both engines are reliable, the 8v sl more so. Both are blessedly simple, the 8v sl more so.
