Have you already moved around the shims so that you don't know how many and size it was on each side?
If not, just leave the shims as they were before, when you took the transmission apart. It will work great that way. The chances are pretty big that you get noise from the ring and pinion if you try another setting with shims than the transmission is used to.
The way to set preload of differentiel bearings are a very course method and you could actually get a whole bunch of different readings depending on what you feel is "snug" when tightening the driver housing.
So, if you know where the shims belonged at before, leave them there.
If you absolutly have to change/find the preload, leave the ring gear in place and tighten the RIGHT driver housing down without any shims in place. This way the ring gear moves away from pinion, and you measure the free space on the Left side of tranny instead. It's a little bit less space on that side for the feeler gauge to get in, but you only need to measure at three points. And you will find three points easily on that side.
But as I said, don't mess with it if you don't have to.
