Yes, I do still know the size and orientation of the original shims. I bought all new shims, plus two carrier bearings, plus the thrust washers for the inside of the differential, plus the rear differential cover seal. I sort of feel obligated to do the repair now that I blew $100+ on the new parts. Otherwise I would take your and GregD's advise and not mess with it. By the way, in the Saab manual they refer to "snug" as 2.6 ft-lbs on the flange bolts. Not that I have any way to measure that small of a torque, but it would be similar to leaving my 16" breaker bar hanging perpendicular. I think I will follow the standard procedure just to see how close it would come to what I have now. Then I will follow everybody's advice and just replace the original shims with the same thickness new ones.
