Unless you've been driving around with the Battery light on, I doubt it's the alternator or battery. The alternator provides all the power required for running the car when the engine is running, and charges the battery. If the alternator were shot, you could still power the electronics from the battery, but the Battery light would be on. If the alternator were well and truly dead, it wouldn't be charging the battery, and the engine wouldn't restart.
It sounds like your engine idles OK, just that when you take your foot off the gas, the engine dies - the engine speed drops, and just keeps going.
If that's what's going on, first and foremost, check for vacuum hose leaks. Vacuum leaks can easily cause this. When you find a leak (notice - not 'if' - I've never seen a car without at least one) keep looking for more.
What can be difficult is that depending on market, there are different FI systems for your car. You could have CIS or LH2.2, or even a 2.4. If it's CIS, you're on your own.
What I'd look for is the dashpot. That's a little flying-saucer shaped device on the throttle body. It has a spring and plunger that catches the throttle as it closes. It should catch the throttle and 'ease' it down to idle in about 5 seconds. What happens is that the damper dies. When you take your foot off the gas, the throttle snaps closed, and the sudden cut-off of air kills the engine.
