Well I think you may have made a mistake when you started messing with the timing chain. You really need a timing light to accurately put the distributor back in, a mark is close but usually not right on. Setting the cam timing is not that difficult. There are a few ways you could fix this.
--There is a line stamped into both timing gears which line up with a mark (that looks like an arrow) on the camshaft bearing caps basically both lines on the sprockets face up and through the holes in the sprokets you can see the arrow on the bearing cap.
you need to set the timing on the flywheel at zero degrees, nuff said
1. So I am assuming the things are still apart, you need to rotate the flywheel to a point where all the pistons will be about halfway down the cylinder, this will allow you to turn the cams until they line up without hitting the piston tops then rotate the crank back to 0deg and put the chain on.
I suggest you tighten the chain tensioner before you put the valve cover back on to make sure everything is lined up, it is really easy to be off by one tooth and not know it until the tensioner is back in.
2. you can set the flywheel to 0deg then losen all the cam bearing caps to take tension off the valves and set them that way-- a little more intrusive then the first method but it works.

I am sure you have read the other posts but remember it takes two crankshaft revolutions to turn the cams once, and again DONT FORCE the cams when you turn them, you dont want this to turn into a rebuilt head.
Oh yeah go buy a timing light and a Bentley or Haynes(cheap) manual.

And if all else fails, call AAA, get it towed to a saab guy and tell him your story, I am sure he has heard it before, I know I have.
Hope this helps,

Cutic
