The car probably has a knock sensor to retard timing/control knock. However, you'll get more power and better mileage if running premium allows the knock sensor to NOT send a signal and therefore does not retard spark advance.
With regular, try lugging the engine at 2000 rpm in top gear (put your foot to the floor at 2000 rpm in 5th gear) and listen for ting ting...it may last only a little bit or you may not even be able to hear it. It's knocking and the knock detector should compensate for it almost too quick for you to hear although you might hear it at 2000 rpm. It's more important at 5000 rpm and you won't be able to hear it.
Try a couple tankfulls of premium and see if your mileage goes up. If it does and you notice the extra horsepower and like it, act accordingly.
