I bought a new Jeep in 84, first year with 5 speed trans. They put in ATF at the factory. They replaced the trans twice in the 1 year warranty, and had a factory recall to have gear lube replaced in every 5 speed.
Stick with what the factory experts advise. If you are concerned about cold weather operation, use a synthetic. They have a lower temp pour point, don't thicken in cold weather. As far as cold weather operation, remember this trans is bolted next to the engine. It wont be cold for long. The synthetic oil will also help for the higher than normal operating temps these transmissions see. I prefer Amsoil,Townsend recommends Amsoil 20W-50, factory recommends 10W-30, many have used Redline, some Honda MTF (I do not know the viscosity of Honda, or if it synthetic , semi-synth, or dino, but I'm sure we will soon find out)
