ATF in a 5-speed tranny??

I had some work done on my 85 Turbo (307,000 kms) the other day, and when I was picking up the car I quized the service guy about trans fluids for my car i.e Saab recommended 10w-30, Redline etc. He said that they recommend putting red ATF fluid in! Due to our colder Northern climate he finds it's the best all-round for smoothing out shifts and wear and tear. This place specializes in repairing Mercedes, BMW and Audi, but do all European cars as well.
Has anyone else tried this in their 900? My shifting is a bit notchy, and I'm looking to change the fluid, but am unsure to what.
