An intermittant odo can be frustrating for those of us who try to keep track of things like gas mileage and maintanence intervals.
My 4th c900 ('86 4dr 8v n/a) had this problem, and it confused the hell out of me for a while. Every time I filled the tank, my calculations told me that I was getting anywhere between 10 and 25 mpgs. There was no signs that the car was in ill health, and I didn't seem to be filling the tank more frequently than usual. I finally figured it out while on a long interstate drive- the car had only logged 30 miles in the past 100 or so when I noticed that the 1/10 mile indicator wasn't moving as I cruised along at 80mph. I always wondered what its real mileage was- the tranny failed at an indicated 175,000 miles.
I can think of one way to add mileage to an odo- the brute force approach. Get a drill or dremel, and spin the mechanism for as long as necessary.
