GregD was right to a degree. I had switched wires 2 & 3 just out of exasperation, because I remembered once upon a time getting the car to start that way. I did it again the other day and forgot about it.
So the situation is that the car will start and move with the wires set as though the firing order were 1-2-4-3. That's where I get low power, and unburned gas in the cat. But the car won't start at all with the wires in the right order (1-3-4-2).
It's a 92 2.1 L non-turbo.
