It sounds like the distributor is turned enough so that it doesn't get the spark to the cylinders that need it. At some point someone may have

Try cranking (or hand turning) the engine to TDC (counter-clockwise as viewed from the front of the car) and then turn the distributor so that the rotor is pointed at the pin for 1 or 4. I think that you turned the distributor too much when you tried to time it.
