Well I went out to check on the car a little more - what I found was not pleasant. I was able to jack up the car and turn the wheel without hearing the unpleasant noise I associated with the car's past breakdown. In addition the noise went away (with the engine running) after spinning the wheel. I then tried, with the engine running, to see if any of the gears would work. 1-2-3-4-R all did not move the car. Strangely though when I tried 5th the car moved (just a little though). I then thought "What the hell, maybe I can drive around the block in 5th"
I did drive around the block in fifth but none of the other gears worked.
This obviously means that the transmission inner driver is irrelevant as the transmission is at least partly dead.
Why would 5th gear still work? Why all the other gears dead but 5th still working?
The other pertinent question now is what sort of transmission to look for. I suppose that I could buy a rebuilt - in fact andrews of princeton told me over the phone I could expect to pay ~$750 for one. The car is an '88 900S w/ 16v engine - what sort of transmission (permissible/prefereable) year range will work with this combination?
