In regard to you only having 5th gear....
Last year I was having problems with my reverse and attemped to fix it using the aforementioned advise of them websites. It worked. BUT, more to the relevance of your situation, there were times that I, too, only had 5th gear and, sometimes reverse. From my experience of being stuck in reverse, it may be that you need to open up the side panel to the transmission and wiggle things around a bit to get all your gears back. I know, this is about like Donald Rumsfeld replying to the question "is the war in Iraq over" so I'll try to explain a bit better.
I recommend checking out the details and pics from Jeff and Royce's website (http://www.twinsaabs.com) on the reverse gear fix. This will show you what you'll be looking at and what you may need to do by opening up the panel on the passenger-side of the tranny. It's really not too difficult on only requires a 12mm to unscrew the outside and a 10mm to loosen the pivot bolt (this I know to be true). Don't be a dumbass like me and think that removing the exhaust manifold is necessary. I can't give you exact details on the position of the pivot arm, but in the upper left, you will see a gold slide with the number '5' on it. For some reason beyond my comprehension, the reverse and 5th gear are interconnected. Make sure this swinging '5' is able to slide back and forth, return it to the upright postion and you should be good to go.
Take this advise as you will...I have done this before and it's worked, but I can't explain exactly why, but I don't think your tranny is down for the count just yet.
