shocks -- how to test?

I have to ask ... is there a way to test shocks?
on one of my 900's the rear end skips sideways in a turn when hitting a bump in the road. Leads me to think rear shocks are dead.
But the "good old" shock bounce test shows them fine. You know, jounce the car as hard as you can and it it comes to a rest in 1.5 cycles.
This test works for 4000 lb cars. Does it not work for 2500 lb cars?
