Hi,
First off I’d like to apologize for this long post, but I have a lot of questions and I hate it when ppl post a dozen posts one after each other with a different topic, so here goes.
I have a friend who has a 1984 900 that needs some work. She said she bought it from a guy in Buffalo(I think) that goes by the screename of “kevin 86 900t” on this forum. I looked up his old posts, but can’t find an email for him.
Here is what she wrote in an email about the car:
“The main problem with the car is the brakes. If I touch them lightly, it is as if nothing is wrong. When I need to stop quickly, and punch them, I get the grinding noise. There is also something going on with drainage - when it rains, I get puddles on the floor in the front.”
I haven’t gotten to look at the car yet so please forgive me. First off, what is the brake setup as in disk/drum front and rear? Next, is there a write-up on doing the brakes somewhere on this site? I looked in the FAQ but couldn’t find a tech on it. I’ve done my fair share of brake jobs, so I don’t need to be spoon-fed, but there always seems to be a few “tricks” to the specific car you are working on like getting the rotors or drums to come off, the order to bleed the brakes in, resetting the parking brake, etc. This is the kind of thing I’d love to find out before I am under the car.
Next, what are the preferred replacements parts, brand and retailer? I have a late model 300Zx and on our cars you are much better off going with Brembo replacement rotor blanks and MetalMaster pads versus going back to OEM or with part store parts. Remember, the car belongs to a girl who just uses the car for her daily needs and doesn’t want to spend a lot of money, not a guy who wants race pads. That being said, brakes are an extremely important aspect of the car and it would be foolish to use inferior parts to save a few $$, in my opinion.
And what about the master cylinder and wheel cylinders/calipers? Are there rebuild kits available, or would it be better to just buy rebuilt parts? If you pull any brake parts are there fasteners that should not be reused, like slides for the calipers?
On to the water on the floorboards issue. I have a couple guesses, one being a leaky windshield gasket letting water in(happens to me in my Wrangler), or blocked drain holes somewhere that can be cleaned using a coat hanger and compressed air?
So, a recap of the info I’m hoping to find:
1) Brake setup on the car.
2) Preferred parts(brands) to use for replacement.
3) Tricks to doing the job, if any.
4) Cause(s) of water on the floorboards.
5) Email of member “kevin 86 900t” as he may know about anything that is not stock on the car, knows the car well and be willing to give me some info via email if needed, etc or might just find it interesting that his old car is still hanging in there.
Thanks again, and sorry about the long post. My email is my91z@hotmail.com,
Mike
