Without knowing whether there are any uneven running problems it's hard to give a definitive yeay or nay to the valve job theory.
But, it's normal for the solenoid valve to click a few times when you start the car up. Continuous clatter from the APC solenoid could indicate one of a number of things, a few of which are:
- Incorrect spark plug wires. These cars need a shielded type of spark plug wire to keep the knock sensor wiring from picking up interference that the APC box interprets as knock. When it senses knock, it makes the APC solenoid chatter to decrease boost. Original equipment spark plug wires (Bougicord) are the ones to use for normal drivers. They can be gotten from some of the site sponsors fairly inexpensively.
- Bad pressure sensor or worn spots on the windings of the pressure sensor (behind the lower dash on the drivers side)
- Uneven fuel pressure due to a marginal Fuel Pump Relay or "difficult" ECU (fuel injection computer). The ECUs on '88 Turbos are pretty bulletproof. (My car just experienced a return to full boost after replacing a marginal fuel pump relay.)
- Bad knock sensor or knock sensor cable
A couple of questions:
How high does the boost go on the gauge? Up to the bottom of the Red? Mid-yellow?
Does the engine idle smoothly?
What's the gas mileage like?
