Sounds like your water pump bit the dust. You need to check your plugs condition. If you can get the car running again after the visual inspection then watch your coolant level to see if any bubbles coming from the reservior. The best and I mean the very best and quick way to isolate the head gasket problem is to bring your car to a gas station or a decent shop and ask them to put your car on the scope. Make sure have them stick that CO2 probe in your reservor instead of the tail pipe. If the reading indicate any CO2 at all that translate into a bad head gasket. This quick scope test will probably cost you about $25 or sometime free if you tell them a little white lies sayin' that you'll back to do the work with them and you don't have the funds at the moment. I've been driving Saabs since 84' and I only managed to blown 3 head gaskets so far. The 16-Valves Saab are bullet-proof.
