Pressing bearings - do I have it backwards?

I'm replacing both the 6-bolt differential flange oil seal (just inside the inner driver cup), and the ball bearing within the flange (outer bearing - sometimes called "differential bearing" or "differential output bearing" - not the heavier-load inner roller differential bearing)
Removed inner driver companion axle stub from flange, oil seal, and old bearing.
Cut a part the old bearing, removed ball bearings & cage, to have inner and outer race.
Cut ~1/4 partial arc out of outer race, so it would clear the 'gearbox oil reservior holder/lip' at the bottom of flange.
Tapped new bearing into lightly oiled flange housing using old 3/4 outer race - all okay so far
Lightly dremelled out old inner race, slightly increasing ID, so it wouldn't stick on the stub shaft. Tapped new bearing/diff flange housing onto lightly oiled inner driver stub shaft, using short hollow pipe on the old inner race, ultimately applying pressure only to inner race of new bearing.
But the last step damages the new bearing
Do I have it backwards?
I might try to find a big C-clamp or bench vise vs using a hammer and drift
