Matt,
Your '87 900 (since it's an 8-valve) is much like my '84 900S, fuel injection-wise. Russell and the boys who mentioned CIS system things are on the right track for you (the others assumed you have a 900S, which has the 16-valve motor).

Anyway, if your oil/fuel goo in your air filter is a problem, I'd try cleaning it with some liquid acetone and coffee filters (produces no lint).

I recently changed the air filter in my '84 S and had to clean off the throttle body butterfly valve (throttle valve) and the air flow sensor's metering plate due to all the blow-by crankcase (PCV) vapors which had condensed into a tar-like goop.

A photo of my '84S's airflow sensor metering plate (dirty) is below.

Click on the link for a photo of the same plate after cleaning with acetone.

Airflow sensor/metering plate is accessed, as you said, by removing the tapered rubber bellows which connects the airflow sensor to the throttle body/intake manifold. (Undo the clamps at each end of bellows--you can use a slotted, regular screwdriver on the clamps, but I've found a flex-driver with 7mm hex socket is better.) It takes some muscle to pull the bellows off the throttle body, as the tar-like goo is almost a glue, binding the bellows to the throttle body--at least mine was. After removal the bellows is tethered to the air filter housing with the air temperature sensor and cable, so don't try to remove it from that! Just let it rest on nearby objects. Be sure to open the throttle and clean around the throttle valve, too! Carb cleaner works well to remove gunk, too (the type which notes it's oxygen sensor safe is best).

Hope this helps!
