Remove the ground wire from the alternator to the engine. Check the integrity of the connectors on each end. Replace the wire and connectors, if necessary. This is very common, and overlooked. Don't just "look" at it, remove it for a thorough inspection.
The wire insulation disintegrates on the 85 900s, you will need to check the wires for continuity and physically / visually inspect them. I have replaced sections of wiring on my 85 spg because of disintegration.
