they are not too bad...cheapo's for around 30-50?? esp at harborfreight tools. good ones around 100$ that's why i rented...5$ :), or grind the end of a bit square and use the tap, just take your time, it will cut eventually.
. those exhaust studs take a beating. esp around the turbo. i only helicoiled the ones that were noticeable ugly, 2 i think. for now, helicoils work very well. recess the threads on the coil about one thread below surface. when stud is tightened it will expand the top two threads out and grab better. helicoil will hold quite a bit over stock. you may be able to use threadlocker on it since it is heatsinked by the head. as per studs...i have not had anyu problems with long ones but with copper exh gasket there is really no way to compare. i certainly do recall having a hard time keeping that side sealed. maybe a short stud will help, don't know.
spg engine is back in with rebuit trans. i used a 4 spd main case and a 5 sped gear set. turned out pretty good. 4 old trans to part from, got a fair set of components, better than the one that came out of there.
the tuning sounds fun. wideband prolly help a lot. it will certainly allow you to get it close for final dial in and will respond more to the way you drive....then again.....as i recall...the dyno seemed like your daily commuting habits! :)
i am still along way off from doing anything of that nature...still smarting from continual maintenance with the ugliest spg on the planet. got my 99 project but i may just wait a few years for that...took me two just to rebuild spugly's transmission!...i think it is a motivation problem...either that or the pills..
ciao
