are you sure you have the right gasket? i think there are 2 thicknesses.
start by washing it all down with some simple green, a little water then follow up with some carb cleaner...basically get it free of oil and dry. then start it and watch what happens. generally the 8v is a pain to seal. what i do is clean the groove real good with paint stripper or gasket remover. since my cover (16v) is bead blasted i do not need to worry about the paint. wire brush the groove real good etc. almost all vc leaks are due to a piece of old gasket stuck somewhere. also make sure that the gasket is not "squeezing out" somewhere.
ok so get it down to the metal on the cover, clean the head surface again. use acetone as a final wipe. i have had excellent results with a product called gaskacinch. be careful placing the gasket because it is basically just a high temp contact cement, once touched together it is stuck, prevents gasket movement under torque down. i'm assuming that it is a cork gasket?? for gaskacinch coat all surfaces and let dry before assembly. you also need to use new sealing washers under the screws, also clean the screw with paint stripper...get everything spotless before assembly..
however, b4 doing all this be sure to locate the exact source of the leaks and look for cracks in both the cover and the outside of the bolt holes in the head. unless the gasket has squeezed away to the side ( common malady, that's why i use gaskacinch) it should not be leaking that much, even when they do leak it is not a lot unless there is a major assembly error or a major hidden crack somewhere.
