Turn the wheel gently to the stop. Look at the angle the top line of the airbag makes in contrast to the bottom of the instrument cluster. The angle should be the same when turning the wheel to the stop on both sides. With your wheel you will probably get different angles. The thing is, is that it will allow one side to turn too far which can rip boots and tear brake lines.
I've had it happen both times I have replaced dashpads in both of my 900's. It is so hard to get that wheel and airbag collar centered correctly the first time. The airbag collar turns 3 times each way if I remember correctly. Since I knew my cars were in alignment to begin with I was able to just recenter the wheel until that angle was correct and the wheel centered when driving straight.
I however have also had a crooked wheel after installing ball joints. In this case the car required an alignment to recenter wheel. Sounds like this is your case since you have not had the wheel off.
Hope that helps, may be pointless now because others have already chimed in.
