Hi:

I am having pretty much the same problem. As it a matter of fact I just
had it about 6 times tonite before I got home. I have an 89 900 Saab. Just
replaced the fuel filter. Prior to that I replaced the all the spark plugs,
spark plug wires and rotor/ditributor cap. Took it to three shops and no one could recreate the problem. Initially, we thought it was the rotor/Distributor/spark plug wire combination. So I replaced all that. That worked for a while. But now in Springtime I replaced the fuel filter,
and drove about 50 miles also crusing down the road about 55 to 75 when
the car started missing like it was not getting gas and would lose power, then sometimes regain power then lose power then I would have to pull over and wait 5 minutes. I would wait 5 minutes and it would start right up again. Go about 3 or 4 miles then it would die again. Have to pull over and restart the car again after 5 minutes. Finally about the 6th time of stalling the car finally backfired. Wasn't sure it would start again, and
waited 10 minutes and it started up again. After about the second time it did this I went to gas station and put in a full tank of gas as well as STP
gas treatment. After sixth time and the backfiring the car as I said restarted again after about ten minutes, and this time once it started it again I was able to drive another 30 miles to my destination without any problem, no more backfiring, no more loss of power. I really have no idea what is going on.....however, the last mechanic I took it too replaced the
old fuel filter with a new one prior to all these incidents. When he inspected it he found a lot of crud in the inlet side of the fuel filter and also indicated the gas was a black color, instead of red. Not sure what that means. The gas tank is one of the metal versions instead of a plastic one like the newer models. There appears to be something either wrong with the gas, perhaps water in the gas. Would that explain intermittent loss of power? This was a long trip I took tonite of about 125 miles and I am really kind of afraid about taking another long trip with the car. Any ideas? Sounds like I am having the same type of problem
that this other fellow is. Perhaps one of the plugs was going bad. Not sure
what is going on. Any ideas on this and recommendations would be appreciated.
