Greg:
I had the same problem in September of 2002. We replaced the rotor, distributor, and spark plugs as well as all wires. We also had replaced the
fuel pump earlier last year. I started having the same problems last weekend. I would be driving down the road when all of the sudden the car
would lose power at about 55 to 60. It would then just stall out or it would rev up like it was getting enough gas then sputter and stall out. At that point I would pull over. Wait a few minutes and the car would start right up again and off I would go. Yesterday on the way home this same thing happened six times. The mechanic I took it too, replaced the fuel filter and when he opened it up he noticed two things. One, the inlet part of the fuel filter was full of crud. He said it was only filtering at about 50% of capacity. He replaced that with a new one. He also said the gas was a black color instead of reddish color. He said I would need to run
a couple tanks of new gas thru the system and that should clear up the problem. Back here in Maine it is a well known fact that there tends to be water in the gas stations. However, after the fourth incident of stalling yesterday, I went to the gas station, filled up the tank and put in STP gas treatement. After I left the car stalled once more, I waited and restarted it, then about 4 miles down the road again it stalled again like all the times before but this time there was a gigantic backfire. At that point I waited ten minutes at which point it restarted and I have not had any more stalling incidents since that time. But I don't trust this car right now, because I am at a loss as to what in the world is going on. I have owned SAABS for 15 years but I don't want to throw good money after BAD. Everyone here on this Board is telling me it is the fuel pump and the sock that is inside it is probably clogged and also needs be cleaned out. Also, someone else seems to feel I need a new ECU. Someone else mentioned the fuel pump relay. Right now the car is running fine but how do you know what to do in a case like this.
