'86 900S: Can't budge caliper yoke to install pads Posted by Baab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
In September of last year I replaced both front brake calipers on my '86 900S with "fully-loaded" rebuilt units. Since then I have put about 12,000 miles on the car. Yesterday I started hearing a faint grinding noise when applying the brakes, checking it I found the passenger side was very hot and the pads on that side were worn completely down. (This is *not* the usual parking brake problem, cable and parking brake lever move freely.) It took a lot of hammering and cajoling to remove what was left of the pads. (A replacement caliper is being shipped to me by the vendor under warrantee.)
The problem I'm having is with the caliper on the other side. There was no evidence of overheating, binding, or excessive wear, but the pads are getting a little thin and of course both sides should be replaced anyway. Using the special tool I had no trouble rotating the primary piston in to install the inboard pad. However I can't seem to budge the yoke in order to make room for the new outboard pad. I've tried a pretty good-sized pry-bar, even opened up the bleeder to relieve any pressure, but no good. (In the past I've found prying on the frame usually brings it right out.)
Any suggestions in "persuading" this thing?
