The larger pinion bearings started in the '89 model year.
The thing to be aware of is that transmissions later than mid-86 have internal shifter centering and the length of the shift shaft is different than yours, so you'll need to get a shifter assembly. It may be a drop-in for your car, but I can't say for sure. The different-length shifter may start earlier than 'mid '86.
Donor transmissions from cars that you haven't tested are always suspect, anyway. But if it's from an '83 non-turbo with 76k miles, it may not be all that bad.
If your car is a non-turbo 8-valve ('85 900S?) then a pre-'89 transmission from a non-turbo 8-valve would probably give you good service, assuming that it starts out in halfway decent condition.
