Cool start problem

My '84 Turbo has had a recurring issue for years: especially (but not exclusively) when the weather is humid, it has trouble getting started when the engine is mostly, but not completely, cold. When warm, it starts fine. When cold (i.e. no engine activity overnight or longer), it also does fine. But there's a sort of intermediate range, when the engine has been off for
say 2-6 hours in warmish weather, when I have some problems.
Here's the sequence: Starter turns, ignition comes up fine. Two seconds later, RPM drops precipitously, and as often as not it stalls out. If I
push the pedal at just the right time, I can usually rev it enough stop it from stalling out, but it runs very roughly. It recovers for a few seconds, then the RPM drops again. It's very periodic. The first quarter-mile or so of driving, it's jerky. Then it warms up a little and all is well.
Any ideas out there about what could be going on? It's been happening for years, and gotten ever so slowly worse as the car has aged. It's hardly crippling, but it's annoying and a little embarrassing.
