My 89 900 had similar symptoms with my passenger seat passive restraint. Except mine began to get flaky, and then progressively got worse until it stopped functioning. I ran through the entire system, and discovered the problem while trying to disconnect the 2 wire connector up in the front passenger fender well (towards the rear of the fender well right above the door hinges). This connector was the junction between the wires coming from the door switch (located on the door latch mechanism inside the door)and the wires passing into the cabin. I had major corrosion in this connector which eventually destroyed the contact. Upon finding this I pulled all of the connectors apart in that location on both the passenger and drivers side, but none of the others showed any signs of corrosion. I cleaned the contacts, filled them with dielectric grease and put them all back together. Now my only problem is the seat belt reels not releasing, so my car tries to strangle me when the belt is going to the locked position.
