I just bought a '91 Monte c=Carlo yellow 5 speed convertible with 75K miles, with full service history and in excellent condition. I expected that it would need a couple of things, and just for my desire for a tight suspension, I replaced all 4 shocks and had all the bushings checked. I had the non-working A/C converted to r134a (now working). Within a few weeks, addressed the sudden appearance of coolant in the driver's footwell by replacing the heater control valve, and had the top replaced. I'm used to old cars needing things now and again, so these were of no surprise.
There are a couple of typical problem areas...head gasket, heater control valve (if the heater knob is stiff, get ready to replace it), cracking dashes, and definitely look out for those. Make sure the top mechanism works well...new tops will run you about $1100 installed if it has rips in the side.
I personally love the looks of the classic 900, and feel as though they have less cowl shake than the NG900 and 9-3 convertibles. I also love the sound of the turbo and exhaust in these cars. I won't be driving it in the winter, as I have a 9-5 Aero wagon as my primary transportation.
There are plenty of them out there...definitely look carefully.
Best,
Paul H.
