I'm going to guess a shaft/spline issue - either in the transmission or in the chain drive from the engine to tranny.
The clutch isn't going to engage itself.
It's possible that you've got a shift linkage problem, and under movement you fall out of gear. You then *think* you're shifting into gear, but you really aren't. You should feel a difference in the shifter under those conditions.
If you can shift gears, AND the shifter feels normal - like the clutch was in - then the tranny isn't turning, but the engine is. This could be two things. There is a splined shaft that goes into the clutch that's part of the chain drive from the clutch to the tranny. Perhaps the splined shaft is slipping out - maybe the splines are shot. That would explain the rattling sound you hear - spline on spline as the engine turns. You can shift gears, because the engine isn't turning. It should feel a little harder to shift, just like if you were shifting with your foot off the clutch when the engine is off. After it sits for a while, the tension on the chain allows the shaft to slip back into place.
Alternatively, there could be a splined shaft slipping inside the transmission - the main drive shaft. I'd have to think about how the tranny drive works, but I doubt that's the problem.
If shifting is really too easy when the problem occurs, I'd look at the shift linkage, from where the linkage is right under the key out to the tranny. If shifting is a little notchier, like when you shift without the clutch and the engine off, I'd look at the drive shaft. Pull the plastic cover off the front of the clutch - much easier on your NA car than a turbo.
Good luck!
