Yes, it should be done... Posted by JustinHiFi [Email] (#829) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JustinHiFi) on Thu, 5 Jun 2003 20:02:14 In Reply to: Survey: Turbo Cool-down, Jesse 89 SPG, Thu, 5 Jun 2003 19:48:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
All turbo cars/trucks (Honda, Porsche, Chevy, Ford etc...) should be allowed to idle for 30-45 seconds before shutting down the engine. This allows the scorching hot oil temps in the turbo housing to be flushed out with cooler oil. This will prevent oil from "cooking" and gumming up the turbo seals, inlet and outlet pipes as well.
I do it on my '88 9000 Turbo, as well as on my dad's '96 Chevy 6.5L Turbo Diesel.
Also, 30-45 seconds is usually good if you have not been really getting into the boost beforehand. If so, let it idle maybe upwards of 2 min. Some racing companies sell an item called a Turbo timmer that will keep the car on till the turbo temp drops, then turn the car off, as you walk away from the car. My friend on his 01 VW 1.8T Jetta (MAJOR mods) has one of these.
