more on rebuilt brakes

I had the same symptoms that Graham did and had to use quite a bit of force to free up an internally crapped-out caliper.
That caliper was a recently installed rebuilt (I replaced both rears with rebuilts a year ago [Keep count: these are replacement brakes 1 & 2]). It was covered under warranty, so I called up for a replacement. The replacement came [#3] but was for the wrong side (shoulda checked the new caliper before removing the old one), so I called up for a replacement. The replacement came [#4] but the piston adjustment screw was wrecked, so I called for a replacement. The replacement came [#5] and is currently on the car but no amount of side-to-side piston adjustment could stop the replacement from locking up well before the other side. So, I called for a replacement of the OTHER side, pointing out that the reason I purchased two calipers last year was to avoid precisely this problem. The replacement came [#6] and it's going on this weekend.
The particular rebuild company - Crown - uses slide pins with an English hex size, not the 7mm oem. They also use allen key caps over the piston screw, not 14mm, and bleeder screws with different than stock size. And they barely grease the slide pins. These are small but ultimately annoying details, but anyway...
I don't know if it's common to have to go through *6* calipers to get a safely braking car but at this point I'm going to buy brand-spanking new front calipers if/when the time comes. I can swap out a rear caliper pretty quickly these days...
