Ironjoe & MS - pls note that my post from yesterday had just rough figures in it (the "~1.5"), from a CV joint/Inner Driver job I recently completed on my 91. I've never seen published specs wrt this, but we've got more experienced members on the board (maybe repost queries on weekday)
Just from subjective memory, my inner driver _cups_ had ~2.5" of 'depth' to them. By both visual and by touch inspection, there was (slight) wear in the lateral middle of the cup where the t-bearing spent most of its time: ~1" - 1.25" in may be more accurate.
The tripod bearing rings are designed to float/move somewhat within the inner driver cups, while still maintaining good contact with the inner driver cup grooves
I don't know whether 3/4" is too little, and it would also depend on where you're measuring things from. I would also compare it to the other side.
Bentley states the drive axles changed in 87, becoming 6mm longer.
Some of the site sponsors sell the same drive axle for 86-89 (don't know why not 85, too?)?
To my knowledge:
The inner drivers are the same 85-93/94
The pre 85 inner drivers and tripod bearing were smaller than 85-93/94
The outer CV joints changed either 87 or 90, depending on the source
