You can check the archives for detailed discussions, but from memory here are a few points. They did not just cut the tops off sedans like other make convertibles at the time. Saab convertibles were one of the first convertibles designed from the bottom up as a convertible and built in a separate factory and as a result are slightly heavier and relatively rigid (body does not flex much) and designed with safety in mind. There is even less flex when the top is up. The front windshield is reinforced like a roll bar. The top, when up is also very sturdy and someone told me once they saw a 900 convertible that had rolled a few times (top up) and was still intact and the driver was okay. The frame is like a cage. If the top has been replaced, some have cut the crossbars in the top frame to ease wear on the fabric which might be an issue. The rear window is a catch 22. It is glass - which means you can see through it even as the car gets older and it has a defroster, but it is smaller. In my opinion it is better than the larger plastic windows found on bmw's and others. I found that adjusting the side view mirrors and adding a blind spot mirror to the driver’s side results in the blind spots not being an issue for me. If you’re not a focused driver, this might be different because you have to glance at the rear and side mirrors, not just the rear mirror. A big plus for 900's not found on most cars their age is the side turn signal just in front of the front doors. Hard for drivers to miss when you signal to change lanes on the highway.
