Pure, unadulterated garbage. Just my opinion Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: does the tornado work?, dietrich seney, Tue, 24 Jun 2003 13:36:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Putting a beanie cap propellor into your intake will not help, it will only hinder.
It ain't no turbocharger. A turbo charges takes energy from the exhaust stream and uses it to pressurize the intake charge. With more oxygen in the intake, you can add more fuel, and get more power. The 'tornado' isn't taking power from the exhaust - it's just a lump in your intake.
The closest I've ever seen to a working theory is that if you swirl the intake air, it mixes better with the fuel, and this provides better combustion. There are a few problems with this. Engines spend most of their time at part throttle. Any 'swirl' from this device would be destroyed trying to get past that closed throttle. Any 'swirl' left would need to make it through the intake manifold and then past the valve.
Here's where it doesn't make sense-
Every car company has dozens of engineers with PhDs in computational fluid dynamics trying to squeeze every extra bit out of the airflow. Intake manifold, intake runners, valve size, head design, all crafted to make for the exact right airflow at all engine operating conditions. Crap, er devices like the Tornado have been around for years. If they provided even the slightest bit of help, don't you think it would be standard equipment on every car, truck, bus, and go-cart out there? If it actually worked, it would have been stolen and used everywhere by now.
So, why do people swear by it? I won't comment further on folks that will believe anything, from the tornado to seeing Elvis' face in a potato. Look at it this way-
You spend your $39.95 plus 7.95 shipping and handling, and 2 hours installing the beast. You now start driving. You're expecting better gas mileage, so you pay a lot of attention to your driving- you want to see if this puppy really works. Maybe you're just a little lighter on the gas a few times - you're paying more attention to gas milage, fater all. Presto! You get 2 mpg better on that tank! Could it be because you had a long road trip instead of more around town driving, or just because you slightly modified your driving? Can't be sure.
I'll say it again. For the Tornado to appear to your engine as anything more than a clog in the intake, to provide any value, would assume that every car manufacturer is ignoring a cheap and easy way to improve gas milage and provide a competitive advantage. So either there is a vast, worldwide conspiracy to reduce gas milage (despite the success of some high mileage cars), or the tornado is a worthless piece of junk.
Just a thought
