Battery relocation question...

I drive a 1988 900 Turbo convertible
1) I need to relocate the battery (to make a place for my downpipe), so I purchased a yellow optima. Where is the best place in the trunk to mount this bad boy so that I lose a minimum of space? I tried under the wooden boards, but the battery is 2 inches too big. What have you guys done? I am considering next to the spare tire cuttout, and just enlarging the cut-out, but before I take saw to wood, I would like some input. I hate to burn a bridge and then find out someone else had a better method of building a better mousetrap.
2) Also, some people are grounding to the new battery to the car's frame, while others say that screws up resistances and it is better to run a negative ground line ( a second line) to the negative cable. Any concensus?
3) Where is the best location to run the wires? I want to run them external to the passenger area (ie under the car body) to prevent car fire. Is there a best external area to run and anchor 15 foot of wire.
4) Finally, 2 or 4 guage battery wire? I am thinking 2 as it is thicker. Does it really matter though?
