aalto's test suggestion indicates freon is gone (has departed the area). Freon doesn't get used up, it leaks out through a hole in the system (component/hose/o-ring/etc.).

On my reg SPG, it was still using R-12, but inoperative. I was told by a reputable A/C shop that if I converted to R134 my hoses/etc. would most likely be leaking within a year. Sounds like you changed/replaced the rubber stuff, however, and if so, you should be fine there. The shop did some $48 test (no dye used) to find out the system status, and told me the "blow-off" valve on compressor (brass 14-mm thing next to high/low ports) was leaking. They couldn't get one from their suppliers, so I got one (used, known good system, or $61 at dealer) and they replaced it and serviced with R12 and tested good. Under $200.00 - works great! How long, I don't know.

My best suggestion is: Take it to a Pro - but I don't mean a repair shop that has an "Air Conditioning" sign out front. I would suggest the shop which services Saab A/C systems for the local Independent who SELLS used C900 Saabs with Air Conditioning!

In my case (Lewiston, Maine) a place called "Lewiston Radiator" seems to be the reputable place, and one tech who works there owns my old '89 SPG, and a gray '88 SPG, and they service stuff for the local Saab Indy Sales place. Seemed like a natural. My point is - They're NOT all the same. Some places specialize, some places THINK they can do it. Try for a place whose primary line is air conditioning - they should be good.

Incidentally, I was also told there that many R-134 systems EXPECT to lose freon each year, and need servicing every 3-4 years. Hmmmm!

'90 SPG - red
'90 SPG - black
'99 9-5 SE - red
'84 900T - junk!
