1. Pilot Bearing
I replaced my clutch a few months ago. Car was hard to shift and screeched like a banshee when I pressed on the clutch.
When I got the whole mess apart, the clutch, throw-out bearing, etc were all fine. The pilot bearing was frozen up. That is what led to all the hard shifting.
If you can, find out if the shop changed the pilot bearing when they did the clutch.
2. Saabs take a little getting used to, but if you are having trouble getting it into reverse and 1st when you are at a stop, perhaps you have a weak clutch master cylinder. Try this test:
-engine idling
-step on clutch
-count 1000, 2000, 3000 (3 seconds)
-put car in reverse.
Does it grind? If yes, do the same thing, but this time pump the clutch pedal 3-4 times, then try to put it into reverse. If it goes in easier, then perhaps you have a bad master cylinder. A leaking master cylinder (they leak internally, you won't see fluid) would make your saab harder to shift into gear when the car is sitting still. Also would make shifting more difficult.
Find another Saab 900 enthusiast to talk to about it. Maybe have the shop that did the clutch look at it.
3. Auto? Saab Auto transmissions often die early. When they die, they must be replaced with a new one. They can't be rebuilt. In the US it costs about $3000 to replace an auto trans. The 900S that I drive started out life as an auto. I bought it cheap with a bad trans, and converted it to a 5 speed. Autos suck. But they are british.
4. Saabs. I've rolled a Saab 1.5 times at 50 MPH and walked away. Have owned 7 Saabs. I wouldn't want to drive any other car unless it was a company car.
Hope you get your problem fixed and learn to love your 900.
