I am doing the same thing, just a little ahead of you, on an 88 900T. I went back, after no-start, and checked the cams and they appear OK. I had rolled in a new chain, replaced the head, etc so not just the gasket. So now what...? I got it runnning, barely, but sounded awful and would not idle. Compared the plug wires to my 85 900T and found 1 and 4 were reversed, and I used the pic in Bentley as a guide! That helped a lot, now I have a "weird noise" (hoot) that may be leak from intake manifold gasket I was told. And it runs rough, but seems to be getting better. I suspect if I could verify the seal on the intake it would help, but that is just a hunch. More work to do tonight.... email me if you have ideas or need help.
