1. You CAN'T put the distributor in 180 degrees off on a Saab.
2. Have you checked the timing with a timing light? This can be done just cranking the engine. Is it close enough?
3. Reversing two plug wires, usually 2 and 3, if you removed the plug wires from the dist cap is quite common. The illustrations in bentley can be misleading. If you left the wires on the cap, you should be OK.
4. Check compression on each cylinder. If even and low, the valve timing is off. If uneven, either you messed up the gasket or the head should have been resurfaced.
You say that it will start, but run bad and not idle. You could also try disconnecting 1 spark plug wire at a time and see if it affects start/run. If you find 1 or 2 that don't seem to effect anything, you've localized the problem. If 2, then try swapping them. If only 1, check plug wire for proper resistance, check plug to see if fouled/wet (no spark on that cylinder), or dry (no fuel, maybe bad connection to injector or injector damage).
