I didn't know you do ALL the work yourself.

You see, here in LA, pretty much all control arms are coated with either undercoating or oil residue (from leaks here and there).
So the way I check all of them is to use my pocket screwdriver and scribe back and forth over the area (inside the U-shaped arm) where all of them cracks.

This will instantly leave a trace of where the crack starts and end (pretty much). If I didn't use the screwdriver I wouldn't see half of all the cracked arms because of the undercoating.

If the crack goes all the way over the bigger flat area (vertical) I call it a 90% cracked arm and it needs to be replaced right away.

If I only see half of the vertical area showing a crack, it's a 50%, and the driver (if they want to) can drive the car until next oil change.

So the answer to your question, yes I would have seen the crack before it broke.

Glad you are OK, and yes I am worried about the few drivers where it happens during regular driving straight forward.

And I wouldn't want it to happen to a customer that I checked the car out for and gave it a clean bill of health.
