1. Only the lower ones break. I got Scanwest ones from a guy on ebay for about $35 ea. Cheap insurance and I considered it a wear item to be replaced as a matter of course when I replaced my lower a-arm bushings.
2. Very easy. Anywhere from a 2 - 6 job. 2 being if you can easily break the lower ball joint bolts loose and slide it out, 6 being if they are stuck and you kill the bj. The a-arm to body fasteners are 6 to 8 big greasy nuts. They come off very easily. Installing new bushings and fabricating a homemade press out of washers and a carriage bolt make this a tedious task, but still easily diy. The job becomes a 10 if you discover rust. Took me a lazy afternoon, but then again, so do even the smallest car projects...
3. No rear a-arms.
