the clutch. If the clutch was done six months ago, was the car making the noise then? Did they replace the throwout bearing? Did they check the primary drive chain? All good questions to ask. You may not want them to do the work, but I would get some answers.
Since the primary drive chain spins when the clutch is out and in neutral, it is definitely suspect. Like one of the others said, make a mechanics stethoscope and put the end on the chain cover. If it is rattling or making contact with the side of the case, you will know. Now, can you replace the primary drive chain with the motor in the car? Not sure, haven't done it, but I would think you could. Primary drive chain is not that expensive. Good luck. Let us know what you do.
