This is OK only if the chain itself needing replacement, but how about the guides, etc? And it's not easy to see whether they're worn too, although you can get an idea by looking at the profile [as shown in Haynes, etc.].
The easier method supposedly is to remove the engine from the bay to have good access to the timing cover, but I did the changeout of guides and chain with engine in. Just takes more time. The manual gives basic steps. When I did it [on 85 900T], I took off the valve cover, oil gallery, timing sprockets, alternator, oil pump and timing cover [not necessarily in that order]. My worst holdup was the one vertical timing cover to oil pan stud. That took me about 6 hours.
Tha caution re cam/crankshaft orientation is important as even the manual is not clear since the cast-in marks are not all that accurate. I used a square to align the sprockets. Also hand-turned the engine over to double check for valve crash. Good luck.
