Yes, the SAAB 900 had emergency/parking brakes acting on the front wheels through the 1987 model year. 1988 models started the more conventional rear wheel e-brakes. That's "e" for "emergency," not electronic. :-)

I've replaced SAAB 900 ('84 900S) brake pads several times by myself. It does not require removing the caliper or bleeding the brakes, etc., but I guess you want to do this as a precaution/restoration job.

The only thing which is a bit odd is the need for a small tool (which a dedicated SAAB workshop may have on hand); the design of which is outlined in the Haynes 1979-88 SAAB 900 manual. The tool is a flat piece of metal with two short pins on one side which rise perpendicular from the length of the piece. The pins engage holes in the caliper's piston (which is threaded/ratcheted in its bore as part of the self-adjusting handbrake mechanism). After removing the old friction pads, one needs to both push in AND rotate the piston back into each front caliper using this tool for turning and alternating with a prying object--I used the SAAB lug wrench handle--for pushing the piston inward. The pistons must meet the face of the caliper but must NOT be pushed in any deeper or damage may result.

Note: the REAR caliper's pistons are NOT ratcheted on pre-1988 900 cars, but could be on 1988-onward, I'm not sure. 1979-87 900 rear calipers are not ratcheted and therefore only require pushing the pistons in, not turning them.

I've never replaced the caliper or disc myself, only the brake pads, so I don't know much beyond that. Be sure to bleed the brakes if you DO replace the calipers, though...
