I've been reading torben's posts myself and something doesn't add up. I'm a dealer specializing in Japanese and European cars that typically have 100,000 miles or more, so I'm constantly sorting out mechanical problems with a wide variety of cars. The one thing I've learned is that by and large there are no cars that are completely bullet-proof, and there are very few cars that are truly lemons. We put as much work and money into Hondas and Toyotas as we do Saabs or anything else. While there is a certain amount of luck of the draw when it comes to having problems with cars, by and large the biggest single factor in how a car works for you is how it's driven and treated, and the competencey of those who work on the car. The second thing I've learned is that every professional mechanic has a few blind spots and gaps in his or her knowledge. Whenever we've gotten into a situation where our mechanic was having a problem finding or fixing something, it was due to a gap in their knowledge, and when we took it to someone else, we would usually find the problem very easily. Our mechanic who is extremely good with Volvos and Saabs was having dificulty with a tricky drivability problem on a Mercedes. We took it to a MB specialist and he found the problem right away. I think the problem with torben is torben. Older Saabs do have their idiosyncroseys and I think he's missing them. I'm willing to bet if he took his cars to a Saab specialist, all of his problems would get sorted out.
