advancing timing without modding = no-no

for every degree you advance the timing, you simultaneously decrease the amount of retard by the same amount; hence, the knocking you've experienced. in my experience, even two degrees advance made the car knock on boost.
by modding the stop, you can run more advance while keeping the max retard stock. basically, an actuator connected to the vac capsule moves up/down to control timing. it has a finite travel length: from max advance (up, away from dist.) to max retard (down, toward dist.).
bending the stop down effectively increases this travel length, allowing a greater distance between max advance/max retard.
recommend using a mityvac when doing this mod to test function. test to be sure that max retard (pressure) remains stock.
