The best of speakers often require a more powerful signal at select frequencies to bring out their best. I currently have a pair of Kenwoods that replaced a pair of Pioneers of lesser quality. I noticed that the volume was lower with the Kenwoods at the volume knob position selections I was familiar with, but that the overall response and sound when paired with a quality amp was better. There's a big difference between the 40 - 50 watt per channel radio/CD player amplifier and a seperate 250 watt (max) system driving those front speakers. Say with the Pioneer speakers I could listen at volume setting 16 (out of 30) and be impressed while driving down the freeway. But that setting of 16 was about as far as I could go before distortion began to ruin the experience. With the Kenwoods the same setting of 16 is lower in volume, but then I can use more of the amp in the higher settings to compensate and then some without distortion.
